Scott McKinnon
Scott McKinnon has been an avid artist since he remembers picking up a crayon. Pursuing every art class throughout school, he applied his talents to advertising and print design early inches career. He excels as brainstorming business concepts, designing branding and digital marketing strategies in his current position while squeezes time in for art and sculpture in his spare time.
In his formative years he learned calligraphy, drafting, model building mural painting and produced stop-motion animated films. He can often sketch an idea faster than explaining it to someone with words.
He found a love for sculpting in the mid-2000's when he participated in a community art project making medallions, led by Geert and Ellie Maas. He joined the Kelowna Sculpting Network Society the following year.
More recently, Scott returned to online education and earned a Graphic Design Technology certificate to learn how to create his art digitally, and is interested in pursuing 3-D printing as a form of sculpting.
Scott finished his Business Administration at Okanagan College and embarked in a career of graphic design, advertising and marketing. Gaining sales and creative experience in several media formats, he eventually became the art director at a commercial printing firm. In addition to his interest in visual art, Scott also is a part-time professional magician and has been performing for all types of audiences for over 4 decades.
In 2007 Scott participated in two medallion workshops with renowned sculptor Geert Maas and finally discovered a creative outlet for all his artistic aspirations.
His first medallion, created for the “Spirit of Kelowna” public
art project is permanently mounted in Kelowna City Hall. Three subsequent medals have also been accepted into juried art exhibits supported by MASC (The Medal Art Society of Canada). One in 2008: “Best of M.A.S.C.” and 2009: “A Celebration of Anniversaries in Medals”.
Scott joined the Kelowna Sculptor’s Network Society to further explore the allure of expressing his creativity through sculpture. Scott derives inspiration by observing his surroundings and transforming those images into art. He looks forward to creating many more artistic medallions and other art in the future.
